Beowulf was a great warrior in the land of the Danes and Geats. Warriors are a necessity to this war-like society.
The framework within which the speculation can be conducted is that, on one hand, one of the characters in the poem Hygelac, the king of the Geats can be identified with a warlord mentioned by Gregory of Tours who invaded Francia and was killed there c.
